While many concentrated
arc lamps provide good luminous density, the distribution over the arc is
highly non-uniform. The projection of such an arc onto the condenser aperture
will then no longer illluminate the aperture uniformly. As a result, the diffraction
pattern produced by each point in the specimen will depart from the ideal
Airy disk, further limiting the resolution obtainable. The Scrambler projects
a nearly uniform source of illumination onto the specimen, whose diffraction
pattern more closely approaches the ideal Airy disk, thus effecting a dramatic
improvement in resolution.
